Odoo 20: What’s New and Should You Upgrade? (2026 Guide)
Short answer
Odoo 20 was released in September 2026 and presented at Odoo Experience on 24 September. The headline changes are AI agents that can create and update records inside automations, a full offline mode, Field Service merged into Planning, and the ability to pay vendor bills directly from Odoo. If you are on Odoo 17 or older, plan your upgrade now. If you are on Odoo 18 or 19 with custom modules, test Odoo 20 on a copy of your database before moving.
Every September Odoo ships a new major version, and every year the same two questions follow: what actually changed, and is it worth the upgrade? This guide answers both in plain language. We cover the Odoo 20 features that matter for small and mid-sized businesses in the USA and UAE, the changes that can break custom modules, and a simple way to decide when to move. If you want the official, complete list, see Odoo’s Odoo 20 release notes.

The biggest new features in Odoo 20
1. AI agents that do real work
In Odoo 20, AI agents are no longer just a chat box. They can create and update records, read uploaded files, and be triggered by automated or scheduled actions. You describe a process in plain language — for example “confirm sales orders when the customer replies to the quote email” or “alert purchasing when stock drops below the minimum” — and the agent explains what it will do before it runs. By default, agents ask for confirmation before saving changes.
Odoo 20 also adds an Accounting AI agent that answers questions from your reports and runs reconciliation audits, and you can connect outside AI tools to your Odoo database through MCP (Model Context Protocol), within the user’s existing access rights. One thing to budget for: all AI features now use IAP credits, which are paid separately from your Odoo subscription.
2. Full offline mode
Users can now create, edit, archive and delete records without an internet connection, and run searches they used before. Changes sync when the device reconnects. This is a big deal for field technicians, warehouse staff and sales reps who work in places with weak signal.
3. Field Service is now part of Planning
The standalone Field Service app is discontinued. Its features move into Planning, which gains a live map of technicians, automatic route planning based on customer locations, travel times and travel fees, stock per vehicle, worksheets, and shifts that can be assigned to several people at once. If your business runs on field service, this is the change that needs the most preparation: reports, automations and staff habits all move to Planning shifts.
4. Accounting: pay bills from Odoo and less manual entry
- Pay vendor bills from inside Odoo — one at a time or in bulk, or sign now and pay later.
- Bill line prediction pre-fills product, account, tax and analytic fields from your history.
- Duplicate invoice detection with two warning levels.
- Customer invoice reminders sent manually or automatically.
- Renamed payment statuses: “In Process” becomes “Paid”, and “Paid” becomes “Reconciled”. Train your finance team on this before go-live.
- Parent accounts replace account groups, and asset models become depreciation models.
5. Inventory, purchase and manufacturing
- Suggested minimum and maximum stock levels based on recent sales history.
- Vendor quality rating based on quality checks, plus better matching between vendor bills and purchase orders.
- Continuous production, so the next operation can start before the previous one finishes, and the option to split manufacturing orders already in progress.
- Bill of materials comparison, extra costs on BoMs, and redesigned Kanban and Gantt views for work orders.
6. Sales, CRM, POS and eCommerce
- Switch prices between tax included and tax excluded on quotes, purchase orders and invoices.
- New lead rotation options and lead generation from the Dun & Bradstreet database.
- Point of Sale accepts multiple currencies at checkout, supports service fees and product “snoozing”, and no longer needs the Inventory app for simple stock management.
- eCommerce adds automatic cross-sell suggestions, review request emails and more checkout options.
7. Website and AI search
The AI Website Assistant can build pages from a prompt, and Odoo websites now support an llms.txt file and add structured data by default — both useful for showing up in Google and AI answers.
8. Payroll and HR updates for UAE and US companies
Odoo 20 adds a UAE Emiratization report in payroll, expanded default US leave types, overtime rules for public holidays, and photo check-in for attendance. If you run UAE payroll in Odoo, also see our guide to Odoo WPS payroll in the UAE.
What changes or breaks when you upgrade to Odoo 20
New features are the fun part. These are the changes that decide how much work your upgrade is:
- Access rights work differently. According to early partner reviews, separate record rules are replaced by domains set directly on access rights. Custom modules with their own security rules need to be adapted.
- Field Service moves to Planning. Custom field service reports and automations must be pointed at Planning shifts, and dispatchers need retraining.
- Accounting terms change. Renamed payment statuses and the move from account groups to parent accounts affect custom reports, filters and dashboards.
- Project profitability report is removed in favor of dedicated budget and margin reports.
- Icons change from Font Awesome to Material Symbols, which can affect custom views.
- Integrations. If you connect other systems through Odoo’s older external API, check them on a test copy and plan a move to the newer JSON-2 API.
- Localization timing. Country-specific accounting and payroll features can take a few months to settle after a major release.
None of this is a reason to avoid Odoo 20. It is a reason to test on a copy of your database first and never upgrade production blind.
Should you upgrade to Odoo 20 now?
| Your situation | Our recommendation |
|---|---|
| On Odoo 17 or older | Plan your upgrade now. Odoo 17 reached its planned end of standard support in September 2026, and older versions are already unsupported. Move to Odoo 19 or 20. |
| On Odoo 18 | Support is planned until September 2027. Schedule a test upgrade in the next few months and move within the year. |
| On Odoo 19, mostly standard | No rush. Run a test upgrade to Odoo 20 and move when the features are worth it to you. |
| Heavy custom modules | Test first. Budget time to adapt access rights and reports, and wait until the apps you depend on support Odoo 20. |
| Field service business | Upgrade with a plan: map your field service flows to Planning and train dispatchers before go-live. |
| New to Odoo | Starting on Odoo 20 is reasonable if your country’s localization is ready; otherwise start on Odoo 19. |
| On Odoo Online (SaaS) | Odoo runs the version upgrade for you, but test your Studio changes and integrations on a test copy before you accept it. |
Odoo version support dates
Odoo gives standard support to the three most recent major versions. Based on Odoo’s published planned dates:
| Version | Released | End of standard support (planned) |
|---|---|---|
| Odoo 17 | November 2023 | September 2026 — now ended |
| Odoo 18 | October 2024 | September 2027 |
| Odoo 19 | September 2025 | September 2028 |
| Odoo 20 | September 2026 | Expected around 2029, following the same pattern |
How to upgrade to Odoo 20 safely
- Audit what you have. List your version, apps, custom modules, Studio changes and integrations.
- Run a test upgrade on a copy of your database — never on the live one.
- Rebuild custom modules for Odoo 20, especially security rules, reports and field service logic.
- Check your data. Balances, stock, open orders and history must match the old system. Use our Odoo data migration checklist.
- Run user acceptance testing with the people who use Odoo every day. Our Odoo UAT guide includes a test script template.
- Go live with a plan — cut-over date, backups and support for the first weeks. See the Odoo go-live checklist.
How much does an Odoo 20 upgrade cost?
There is no single price, because the work depends on three things: how many versions you are jumping, how many custom modules need rebuilding, and how large and clean your data is. A mostly standard Odoo 19 database is a small project; an Odoo 12 database with years of custom code is a bigger one. At OdooVizion we start with a free migration audit and then give a fixed quote, so the price does not grow during the project. Odoo license fees are separate — see Odoo pricing. For version-specific details, see our Odoo migration and upgrade services, for example Odoo 18 upgrades or Odoo 14 upgrades.
Frequently Asked Questions
When was Odoo 20 released?
Odoo 20 was released in September 2026 and presented at the Odoo Experience event in Brussels on 24 September 2026.
Should I upgrade to Odoo 20 immediately?
Not always. If you are on Odoo 17 or older, plan your upgrade now because those versions are out of standard support. If you are on Odoo 18 or 19 with custom modules, run a test upgrade on a copy of your database first and move once your custom code and third-party apps are ready for Odoo 20.
Can I upgrade directly from an old version like Odoo 12 or 14 to Odoo 20?
Yes. You don’t need to install every version in between. A migration partner runs the upgrade scripts across versions in one project, rebuilds your custom modules for the new version and validates your data before go-live. See our Odoo migration services.
Do Odoo 20 AI features cost extra?
Yes. In Odoo 20 all AI features, including AI agents, use Odoo IAP credits, which are purchased separately from your Odoo subscription.
Is Field Service removed in Odoo 20?
The separate Field Service app is discontinued, but its features aren’t gone. They now live inside the Planning app, which adds a live technician map, route planning, travel fees, stock per vehicle and worksheets.
Will my custom modules work in Odoo 20?
Not without changes. Custom modules must be updated for every new Odoo version. In Odoo 20, pay special attention to security and access rules, accounting reports, field service logic and integrations that use the older external API.
